In this post will give you 3 reasons why you should choose the storefront theme for your marketplace. Choosing the right theme for your multi-vendor marketplace can be a challenge. Our recent post about the questions you should ask yourself while choosing a theme was aimed to help get you started. Over the coming weeks and months, we will highlight various free and paid themes and the specific reasons you should choose them. We’re starting this off with a theme we use daily, the storefront theme.

What is the storefront theme?

Storefront theme

The Storefront theme is a free theme built by the same team behind WooCommerce. It is tightly integrated into WooCommerce and the most popular customer facing extensions. It’s a great first theme to build your first marketplace or online store with.

Storefront is the perfect theme for your next WooCommerce project. Designed and developed by WooCommerce Core developers, it features a bespoke integration with WooCommerce itself plus many of the most popular customer facing WooCommerce extensions.

This is a popular theme with over 200,000 installs on the WordPress.org theme repository. If you have ever used any of our demos, or demos from many WooCommerce developers you would have come across the Storefront theme. It is integrated into the WordPress customizer and has several layouts and options to get you started.

There are also a few child themes available as well as extensions specifically for Storefront. This provides a range of options to extend the look and feel of your marketplace without having to code anything yourself. The themes offer designs for various kinds of online stores which are also supported by WC Vendors for your marketplace theme.

1. We use it for all our testing

The first reason you should use storefront as your theme as that we do all of our development for all our plugins using the storefront theme. This means that it is guaranteed to work with WC Vendors. Straight out of the box you are ready to go. We have even created some built-in customisations for the storefront theme such as being able to adjust the vendor headers via settings and more.

If you have ever submitted a support ticket or read our debugging guide, the Storefront theme is the theme we recommend switching to. This is because, without a doubt, we know that this theme will work. If the storefront theme is showing a problem that it’s almost certainly a bug in our plugin.

This is the first reason why we recommend using the storefront theme. It just works.

2. It’s fast and easy to configure

The second reason you should be using the Storefront theme is that it’s extremely easy to install and configure. Storefront doesn’t need a page builder or other plugins to expose functionality. It is built to work with WooCommerce to provide fast load times and nice easy to configure settings.

By following the included setup wizard you can have your initial site completed in less than 30 minutes. Some people might think the design is basic, but in our opinion, less is more. You can get extensions or a child theme to get a theme that is closer to your specific needs. We do recommend you start with the bare minimum to test everything out. Then slowly add features as you need them.

Site load times are critical to the success of your multi-vendor marketplace. You only have a few seconds to capture a potential customer and slow loading sites will ensure that doesn’t happen. The storefront theme is extremely lightweight which makes it a great choice for your marketplace.

3. Developed by the WooCommerce developers

The third and final reason you should be using the Storefront theme is quite simple. It’s actively developed by the people behind WooCommerce. That means that you can be sure that it’ll work with WooCommerce and WC Vendors. One of the questions we outlined in our theme post was if the theme is actively developed. Storefront is regularly updated and whenever new features for WooCommerce or WordPress are released it’s already compatible.

There are plenty of 3rd party themes available but it’s hard to beat a theme developed by the same developers as the core plugin you’re using. The same goes for WC Vendors. There are 3rd party frontends available, but they aren’t built by us so you can never guarantee that it will be up-to-date and compatible.

Conclusion

There are literally thousands of themes you can choose from however we suggest you start with the Storefront theme. It’s fast, easy to configure and best of all it’s guaranteed to work with WC Vendors. You can also use this for your standard WooCommerce powered website in a single store setting just as easy and all our reasons are still valid.

If you are using the storefront theme or a child theme of Storefront let us know in the comments.

    • To be honest, there is no comparison. Storefront is extremely lightweight, updated regularly and is tested daily with our products.

One Social, on the other hand, was written specifically for use with BuddyPress social networking. It is a very heavy theme and requires a plugin to function correctly. It is not updated regularly, they override all of our templates in a plugin instead of their theme. This means we cannot detect changes in templates. If you want to create a social marketplace you should look at the Kleo theme. It is a lot more lightweight and easier to use and configure.
