I f I want to know more about a vendor before he/she can apply than I get to know through the checkbox on the user registration page (link to homepage, membership in organizations etc.) – what would be the best way forward? Is it possible to “hook into” the standard registration form? Or is there some tool I can use to map fields from a form to database fields? Or do I have to use a standard contact form tool and copy&paste from an e-mail to register the person as a pending vendor?

It would require a fair amount of custom coding. You’d basically have to create a custom page (let’s call it “/vendorapplication” and in that page, call a page template that loads a registration form with a bunch of custom details in the form. Not terribly complex, but not super easy, either. Look for ways to create custom registration pages and you’ll be on your way to a solution.

I have done this as custom code in a template. What Ben outlines is what you will have to do.

I have mine changing the customer to pending vendor, emailing the site admin, and a custom form that (i generated from WPUF).

It’s a bunch of custom code but it’s nothing out of the realm of possibility.
