    We’re pleased to announce our 19th update to WC Vendors Pro. v1.3.0 with full variation support. Let’s just say right off the bat how much we love all of you. If we didn’t love you, we never would have added variable product support. ITS A NIGHTMARE to code them! 🙂 Literally, you have to be a master class expert at PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and CSS in order to get them to even remotely work. This update has taken around 175 hours of time to code variable product support from scratch. And that’s not even counting the attributes support that was added in v1.2.5. 🙂

    Our variation support is 100% complete. You can do anything with ours as you can with Woo’s in the back end. Our variations will work the same way they do in /wp-admin/ — The same menu choices are there, and the layout is similar. But you’ll find that on our Pro Dashboard, adding variable products is a **LOT** faster and a **LOT** easier than in /wp-admin/. Due to the way the back end works in WooCommerce, there’s a lot of page reloads to get a variable product added. With Pro, everything is done without having to reload pages and refresh things. You’ll find the interface similar, but the speed a lot faster. We’re quite proud of this. 🙂 Remember, when adding a variable product first you add the attributes on the attributes tab, and then you go to the variations tab. And make sure to choose “Variable product” as the product type on the Pro form. If you’re not familiar with how variable products work, you’ll want to review WooCommerce’s variable product type overview, otherwise you will probably be quite confused. https://docs.woothemes.com/document/variable-product/ — While these docs show Woo’s interface, it’s essentially the same in Pro.

    In addition, we’ve added some other cool features:

    • Vacation Mode
    • – Pro Dashboard > Settings > [X] Vacation Mode > Type out a message. When a customer views your store, or views a product in your store, this message will be displayed at the top. Handy for “Hey, I’m going on vacation and wont be shipping orders until January 1st”, or “This weekend only – Save 25% on whatever with the coupon code “OHMYGOD””. You’ll find plenty of uses for it. 🙂

    • Download Improvements
    • – We’ve added an option so that the full URL, and the ability to specify their own URL, for downloadable products can now be hidden. Instead, if enabled, this option will show the filename of the file uploaded, and not the full URL to the file. This is mostly useful for digital download sites with vendors who want to keep vendors knowing what they uploaded, but not WHERE it is uploaded.

    You can download Pro v1.3.0 from your WordPress auto updater, or from your “My Downloads” section on wcvendors.com. Important: If your theme overrides our add/edit product templates or the store templates (those listed at the bottom of the changelog), your theme author will need to update their templates before Pro v1.3.0 will fully work with all the new features, check with your theme author before updating if this is the case.

    Full changelog with everything we did this release is below.

    Thanks, and have fun!

    Ben & Jamie

    Hi Ben,

    I’ve tried to add a variable product on your demo site which worked OK however I couldn’t create my own attributes – is that correct?

    @tjm71 Are you trying to create Attributes or Attribute Terms? Color is an attribute. Red is an attribute term. Vendors are never allowed to create attributes, but they can be allowed to create attribute terms.

    Well done on the release! Is the attributes a bit like the MIX & MATCH plugin? Lets say, could vendors use it to offer a bundle and the customer can select the flavours they want to be included in the bundle?

    E.g. Vendor 1 has 3 flavours on offer and customer 1 chooses 2x flavour A, 1x flavour C in his bundle.

    Could this be done with attributes?

    Many thanks,
    Kris

    Well done both! Love the vacation message and yes you both deserve a 9 year holiday!

    Can see a tonne of improvements with adding variations thank you! This must have been unbelievably challenging!!!

    Here’s a few suggestions which I think would enhance the Vendors experience (you may already have these in your list):

    1) Is it possible to create the variations automatically (after attributes have been added)? This would be easier than the Vendor searching in the drop down to create them? Or failing that a button to create them? Although as they have selected ‘Variable Product’ we already know they want to create variations.

    2) Can we remove the pop up messages for ‘are you sure you want to link all variations’ and ‘XX variations added’ which can get confusing (and a little bit annoying) for Vendors?

    3) Can the boxes in the attributes screen ‘Visible on product page’ and ‘Use for variants’ be hidden as these will always need to be ticked if the Vendor has selected Variable product:

    4) Within the drop downs on the Variations screen, Vendors can still do lots of ‘bulk updates’ to their variations so thanks for keeping that flexibility. I wondered if it would be possible to create handy update fields for the fields that are likely to be updated the most?
    eg Update Regular Price, Update Sales Price, Update Stock:

    Many thanks for all your hard work!

    Karen

    Also…

    5) Is it possible for Shop Owners to choose to remove/hide a lot of the fields in the variations like sku, dimensions, weight, downloadable product etc
    I’d want to strip it right down to just price, sale price, stock and image if possible.

    Many thanks,

    Karen

    @KristinB — That’s what a variable product is. 🙂 You set your flavor attribute and then the attribute terms (sweet, salty, sour, whatever) and then check the box to use them for variations on the add product page. Then hit the variations tab and add them. 🙂

    @Conscious Crafties –

    1.) No. We replicated everything exactly in the same steps as WooCommerce did them. Just because attributes are added, doesnt mean they are used for variations. Remember — THESE ARE COMPLEX SYSTEMS. I’m personally shocked anyone would want vendors even using attributes/variations, because vendors never do anything right. But, they are there if you want them. 🙂

    2.) No. This is JavaScript’s confirmation window. It’s there to prevent misclicks and to provide data. If the popups arent there, then you’d have to do several page reloads slowing the entire system down and creating half working products on your site.

    3.) Not all variations are meant to be visible on the product page. Some variations are hidden for many reason, it all depends on the site.

    4.) Nope. The dropdown bulk tool is for that, keeping the page as clean as possible is the goal, and the way it looks in wp-admin is the way it looks on the front end. Continuity of design is a must!

    5.) Nope. Everything in there is dependant on everything being in there. If you remove parts, you’ll break PHP, JavaScript, and CSS. It’s too complex of a system to have options for turning bits and pieces off and on.

    One thing you might consider, Karen, is using the wcv_before_variations_tab action. You can create a page with screenshots showing vendors step-by-step what to do. Let’s assume this page is /variable-tutorial/ then you’d do this:

    add_action('wcv_before_variations_tab', 'custom_wcv_before_variations_tab');
    function custom_wcv_before_variations_tab(){
      echo 'Variable products can be confusing.  <a href="/variable-tutorial"/>Please read this tutorial</a> to help get you started.<br><br>';
    }

    You know, something like that or whatever works. I never even created a variable product in my life before last month. That stuff is confusing at first even for a self proclaimed woocommerce expert like me. 🙂

    Hi Ben,
    Attributes and variations do not work for me 🙁
    When I click add Custom Product Attribute nothing happens :(. The drop down has one “color” ??? I can use that
    The same with the Variations tab , it is not working at all.
    Please help.
    In admin does work as woocommerce instructions

    Sadly Ben and Jamie, I know you’ve worked hard, but like you rightly said ‘variables are confusing’.

    In this release, adding variables still isn’t user friendly, particularly for my Vendors who struggle to think clearly due to health conditions. Adding a help guide won’t overcome the fact that it’s still confusing.

    Really sad about this as I’ve been so excited to see what you guys did with them.

    How can I turn variable products off for when I update?

    Thanks

    I kind of made it work ( I had an override in my child theme that has to be update manually) . I added two attributes as admin: Color and Size.
    As a vendor I still have an issue. On Variations Tab The color and Size names do not show up????

    Also vacation Mode is not there.

    Please help

    @Conscious Crafties – I’m sad you’re disappointed that variable products are complex to use. But that’s what a variable product is — a complex product. Our actions on the front end are the same as they are on the back end, the interface and the actions are the same. You can of course turn it off the same way you’d turn off any product type, in your WC Vendors settings.

    @ggoaga
    — All of your issues are related to Social Marketplace overriding templates. In the changelog, in this thread, and in the email blast, we specifically said your theme may need updating to work with the new features. Your screenshots show that to be the case. Until BuddyBoss updates with the v1.3.0 templates, you will never get most of that to work yet. You can confirm this to be the case by disabling their Marketplace plugin, and switching to the Storefront theme. You’ll then see that it all works, indicating that your theme needs template updates.

    HI is there a way to add a page to the vendor menu I want to add a page that has instructions on how to use the site for my vendors? Also I am not doing shipping as all my vendors are locally delivering the orders to a common pick up location for the customers is there a way to add a form for the orders that could be printed on labels? Thanks so much!!

    Hello,

    If people wanted variations simple then you’d pretty much have to hardcode everything and hide everything from the user which would kind of defeat the purpose of variations in their current form in pro. With regards to hiding fields like simple products, this _might_ be possible and I will investigate but as Ben mentioned the system is super complicated and taking things out that is expected by the javascript breaks things.

    On a side note

    Please EVERYONE get staging servers up and running so you can TEST EVERYTHING before you update your plugins and themes. Not just our software but ALL software you run on your site. You CANNOT be running your business without testing everything before hand. If you don’t know how to setup a secondary staging site for testing, talk to your web hosting company about this. A lot of WordPress dedicated hosting companies provide this as a simple one click option so it might be worth looking into a host that will better support your business.

    cheers,

    Jamie.

    Is it just me or can’t a vendor upload variation images directly only choose them on the variations tab? Does he need to update them first (e.g. through the gallery images) and afterward, delete the gallery images and select them as variation images? If so, this is not very user friendly.

    #31490

    Yup, we patched that for v1.3.1. It was a WordPress post permissions issue that was preventing the media uploader on the variations tab to work, but you could still choose images, not upload new ones per variation. v1.3.1 was released yesterday.

    Hi Ben and Jamie,

    Few questions around variable products…

    1) Once I update and turn variations off for my vendors, can you let me know if they will be able to amend variable products I have created for them? Currently the ‘Edit’ option is hidden so they can’t mess it up. I’m wondering if that will still be there when I update and if not can they still mess it up (as in if they click save does it still takes out all the options like it did prior to introducing variant support)?

    2) Is this problem fixed now? Vendors on 100% commission (ie sell for free) still got charged a fee if the item sold was a variable product:
    https://www.wcvendors.com/help/topic/urgent-not-working-for-vendors-who-are-set-at-100-commission/

    3) Will variants appear in the orders dashboard now?
    https://www.wcvendors.com/help/topic/will-product-options-variations-appear-in-orders-on-dashboard/

    Many thanks,

    Karen

    1.) If you turn off variable product support, vendors cant do anything with them, they are turned off. The Edit being hidden option was removed in v1.3.0 (at least I’m pretty sure it was).

    2.) Should be yup.

    Hi Jamie and Ben

    The update is fantastic and seems to work great on my site! Thank you so much.

    Just a quick query was on the product page when adding a product, for a simple product you can “Configure what to hide from all vendors when adding a product on the front end.” but this seems to only work for simple products and not variation products? Is this right or do I need to alter the “product-edit page” in the child theme?

    Thanks

    @robhorsfall — Glad you’re having some fun with variable products. WE’re looking into ways to properly allow you to hide things, but it’s substantially more complex, by an exponential amount, because variations work with JavaScript and some PHP. Pretty much 90% of it is JavaScript objects which allow the pages to work so fast and fluidly. Editing the template would only allow you to show or hide the variations function, that’s all. We’ll keep you updated with progress on this, it wont be in the immediate future, but in the next big update cycle if we can squeeze it in. As always, check the product form helper for filters and such, too.

    @Nicola
    — Could be a million things, most of them usually related to your website in particular. Could be wrong permissions on files not letting wordpress remove the old version, etc…. If you cant debug it, just grab the latest from wcvendors.com/my-account, unzip on your computer, and then upload via FTP overwriting all files in the /plugins/wc-vendors-pro/ folder.

    Hello guys!

    I am getting some weird results whenever I use the variations function.

    When I import all my variable attributes via the option “Create variations from all attributes,” some of them disappear. I’ve done this a million times and the same thing keeps happening.

    Tell me if I’m doing anything wrong. Here is what I do…

    First I set up my attributes and tick the box labeled “Used for variations.” Then, I open the Variations tab and select “Create variations from all attributes” from the menu so that all of them get imported automatically. Every possible combination is indeed generated. So far, so good, right?

    Next, I fill out the required fields and hit Add Product to publish my post. But then I go to the product page to see what it looks like, only to find out that some variations are missing from the dropdown menu. I go back to edit the product and I see that the missing attributes are really gone. Just like that!!

    I tried adding them back, but as soon as I hit Save Changes, some of them always disappear.

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Hey Ben,

    A few questions relating to variations:

    1. to @ConsciousCrafties point 3: Given that the product type must be set to ‘Variable Product’ in order for the ‘Used for variations’ checkbox to appear, would you agree that it might make sense if this checkbox was checked by default, rather than completely hidden as Karen suggested? This is a subtle change but I think it would make a difference to vendors who get tripped up on the little things. Barring a technical barrier, would you be open to this?

    2. to @ConsciousCrafties point 4: I understand your point about continuity of design, as the dropdown does mirror the one on the back end. Perhaps a less specific solution would be to create a second ‘bulk editing’ dropdown for everything after ‘Delete all variations’. Maybe something to consider if you guys deem it reasonable from a programming perspective.

    3. I was using the required field function for the price of simple products, but noticed this prevented me from saving variable products, so I had to disable that function and all worked well. Just a heads up in case anyone else encountered something similar.

    4. Relating to hiding certain checkboxes / fields for variables. Perhaps an interim solution which would not cause conflicts would be to add some css classes like “all-25 downloadable”, “all-100 shippingclass”, etc. and then vendors could set whatever they want hidden right now to visibility:hidden. This is not the prettiest solution, but what do you think?

    Have a nice weekend!

    Hi Ben,
    The marketplace got updated and the vacation option works now. Variations still do not work. When I click on Variations tab it does not do anything. Any thoughts???
    Btw I got WooCommerce JPlayer Product Sampler (https://www.woothemes.com/products/jplayer-product-sampler/) Integrated with your plugin and now it does work on vendors shop : https://www.grapey.com/shop/preview-test/ .
    As soon as I figured what the developer did, I will share it for your customers.

    @ggoaga: yes, same here. the marketplace prevents the variations tab to be clickable/selectable. When you deactivate the marketplace plugin it works, so this is a bug in this plugin. I’m afraid we have to wait for a fix by buddyboss.
