Can’t find this discussed, so just wanted to drop this in to see your thoughts.

(Not sure if this is about forking WC to make it multisite per se, or basically another attempt to simply make it multi-vendor. Or both.)

It has nothing to do with WC Vendors, I saw the announcement of it on Facebook.

What it is, is if you have http://www.buy.com http://www.shop.com and http://www.store.com and you want them to all use ONE WooCommerce installation on a MultiSite environment, then you can manage all of your separate stores on one wp-admin.

WooCommerce doesnt support MultiSite with shared user accounts and products.

I think this project is going to be a massive undertaking, and can be done, but damn, it’s a lot of work. I wish them the best of luck with it. 😉

It would indeed be a worthwhile undertaking (something Woo/Automattic should do), and I’d reckon would do wonders for WCV overall. But alas, it’ll likely remain to be seen for a long time to come, and worthwhile undertaking may not necessarily translate to realistic, the same way I’ve seen other WP forks before (like the single-db MU-like fork one from ibiblio) getting shelved by the time Automattic comes around to integrating that functionality. Only question now is if they’d have this in the roadmap someday.

Thanks for clearing that up, Ben.

I think it’d be better done by Automattic now that they own WooCommerce, and have the team and infrastructure and knowledge of the WordPress.com and WordPress VIP platform to handle all their heavy hitting stuff. If anyone can do it, I would have full faith in their ability to do it, do it right, and keep it maintained. We’ll see what happens, may the best team win! 🙂

If in the future WooCommerce did become Multisite compatible, upgrading WC Vendors to Multisite would not be terribly complex, just take a few hours of work.
